Explosions happen when things burn so fast you get a bang, caused by the quick release of lots of energy. Giving something that will burn (is combustible) lots of oxygen can cause an explosion, as a combustible object burns faster when there is oxygen.
Some explosive chemicals have their own oxygen, so it is ready to burn if it is triggered (given a little bit of energy). If you drop nitro-glycerine on the floor it will explode.
