The higgs boson is a particle that gives matter its mass, pretty much like electrons give it is electric charge.

      Liad is slightly wrong

A higgs boson creates what is called a higgs field this field is what is believed to give particles mass, so when a neutrino or an energetic photon interacts with this higgs field it’s given mass and energy which causes it to become a particle of X charge and Y mass.
