A very big piece of equipment scientists have designed so they can smash protons together a very high speeds with a great deal of force (which is why it is called a collider).
The scientist hope to answer big questions about very small particles that make up our universe.

the LHC is a particle collider, protons are sped up to near the speed of light so that they are high; energetic. When these collide they produce more particles in ‘showers’ which if we want to see some of the big particles which don’t exist for long (higgs boson etc) we have to collide these particles at really high energies!
