Rain happens when warm moist air cools, and condensation happens. When the air cools to its saturation point, the water vapour condenses into water droplets. These form clusters called clouds. Over time these draw more water vapour towards them and become bigger. When the water droplets become heavy enough, they fall to Earth as rain. If the air is really cold, the rain can freeze and fall as hail, or snow.

It’s basically all to do with how warm air fronts and cold air fronts meet!
